Each spring, Girls Inc. of Chattanooga’s ‘'Unbought and Unbossed'’ awards proudly honors ten women in the greater Chattanooga area who through their career achievements or community leadership have had significant impact in improving the lives of girls and women. The strongest nominees have been trailblazers in their careers, made an impact through exceptional community service and/or volunteered with girls to make a difference in their lives.
The '‘Unbought & Unbossed'’ awards were started in 2005 to celebrate local female role models who embody Representative Shirley Chisholm’s ideals. Girls Incorporated of Chattanooga named the awards after Representative Chisholm, the first African-American woman to serve in Congress and run for president. During her 1972 presidential bid, Chisholm declared herself to be "‘unbought and unbossed"’ and a catalyst for change. She was also described as a woman who was ‘determined, intelligent and audacious in her beliefs.’
